How to Pre-Select A Criminal Defense Attorney
Part of being a responsible armed citizen and concealed carry permit holder is being prepared for the aftermath of a defensive shooting incident. One of the most important decisions you will make is in selecting an attorney to defend you in a criminal and/or civil court room. I suggest to my students that it is important to do that research and make that decision ahead of time so that you can have the confidence that you have someone to represent you and so that you can have that attorney’s contact information saved in your phone and available to you in the very moment you need it.
Starting in the yellow pages or with an online search is not likely to be an effective method to find a good criminal defense attorney. Attorney’s are a dime a dozen and they are not all equal. Your task is to find someone who has a winning track record, experience with local firearm case law, and a large enough team to have the resources to tackle any challenge. Included in a membership with the United States Concealed Carry Association is access to a directory of local pro-2nd amendment attorneys in the USA. That is the perfect place to start if you are a member. If you aren’t yet, you should consider it.
Here are some factors to consider in your selection.
- Check state bar website for complaints or any other comments.
- Google search. Others who have used him/her will post their individual results. Good and bad..
- Find cases were others have had to get an attorney and who did they use and did they win
- Like in buying your firearm… You will get what you pay for! Don’t be scared away by high fees and retainers.
